The history of Republic of India began on 15 August 1947 when the country became independent from British rule. Initially British East India Company ruled India, in 1858, by Government of India Act 1858, it transfered its functions to British Crown.This lead to the establishment of British Raj (British India).Many stamps are issued by British for the postal purposes on the names of their crown's.
The first stamp of Republic of India was issued on 21st November 1947,showing the New Indian Flag.
On 15th December 1947,two stamps are released showing the images of the Asokan lion's capital and Airplane.
Asokan lion's capital is the National embalm of India.The Lion Capital of Asoka is a sculpture of four Indian Lions standing back to back. It was originally placed at top of the Asoka Pillar at Sarnath.This Lion Capital of Ashoka from Sarnath has been adopted as the National Emblem of India and the wheel Asoka Chakra from its base was placed onto the center of the National Flag of India.
Republic of India issued a total of 3 stamps in the year of 1947.
